Beijing theater embraces the short form – and a 111th Birthday present for Lao She

It was a week of short and sweet theatre in Beijing last week, with  the launch of Fish out of Water, the third annual Beijing International New Short Play Festival. Hosted by the Beijing Innovative Theater Experience (BITE), the 2011 festival works were based on the humor and poignancy of living outside one’s culture. For more info see here.

On the other end of the scale, The National Centre for Performing Arts (The Egg) played host to Wang Xiang’s adaptation of legendary Chinese author and dramatist Lao She‘s Short Stories. Coinciding with Lao She’s 111th birthday, The production, Five Acts of Life, was directed by acclaimed Chinese theatre director Lin Zhaohua (who in true Chinese celebrity style even has launched his own self named theatre festival, the Lin Zhaohua Art Festival – the first independent avant-garde theatre festival to be held in Beijing). Stay tuned for reviews of the production soon.
